Fold-flat is a construction requirement
A folding carton and a collapsible rigid box are not the same. The rigid version uses reinforced panels with an assembly method that creates its final shape. Magnetic, adhesive or other closing details may be involved. Specify that flat storage is required at the start so the structure, wrapping paper and insert can be designed around it.
Compare the total packing job

Check assembly before choosing the artwork
Ask for a structural sample and have the intended packing team assemble it. Check the sequence, corner alignment and any adhesive or removable backing. Then put the real product inside and remove it again. A photograph of an assembled box does not prove that it collapses, so the sample should demonstrate both states.
Choose a compatible inside holder
A removable paperboard holder can be packed separately; a foam or EVA insert may remain bulky. Decide whether the holder will be fitted at your site or supplied already in place. For multi-item kits, list each component and identify fragile or heavy items before the cavity layout is agreed.
Print and decoration at the folds
Printed wraps, foil and other finishes need to be positioned around panel joins and assembly folds. Keep important text readable once the box is formed. A sample should show whether the selected paper and coating behave as expected at repeated movement points. Do not assume a finish suitable for an assembled box will behave identically on a folding panel.
Understand cost and storage tradeoffs
Fold-flat packaging can reduce empty-pack storage volume, but it also introduces assembly choices and work. Compare the total job: box price, insert, inbound freight, storage, packing labour and outer transit protection. Questions before you order
Does every magnetic rigid box fold flat?
No. Magnetic describes the closure, while collapsible describes the structure. Both requirements must be specified.
Can the assembled box be used for courier delivery?
Assess the product, insert and complete shipping system. Flat delivery of the empty box does not establish transit performance once packed.
What should a fold-flat sample demonstrate?
It should show the flat state, assembly sequence, corner fit, closure, loaded product fit and any separate insert components.
