Rigid Box Samples: Size, Artwork & Approval Checklist
A sample is useful only when you know what it represents. Separate size and fit approval from artwork, colour and finished decoration so the production order has a clear reference.

Choose the sample you need

Measure the usable internal space
Record length, width and height in millimetres, and label which side is the opening. For a tube, state the usable internal diameter and height. Measure the complete product including its cap, pump, pouch or accessories. Allow the designer to develop room for the holder and product removal; do not subtract a guessed board thickness from an outside measurement and treat that as a final inside size.
Test with the actual contents
The discovery-set photograph illustrates a pack where several small products need separate spaces. Each vial's diameter, overall height and cap can affect the layout. Count the cavities, place the intended products in them and check how a customer lifts each one out. For a mixed gift kit, review every item rather than fitting only the largest piece.
Use a written approval checklist
- Confirm inside dimensions, orientation and complete contents.
- Open the box, close it and check lid or drawer movement.
- Inspect insert fit, product access and loose movement.
- Read every text line, product variant, barcode area and brand mark.
- Review paper colour, print, foil and other agreed effects together.
- Inspect visible joins, wrapped corners and inside surfaces.
- Confirm packing method and any outer transit protection.
- Record the accepted reference and any remaining changes in writing.
Understand the production timeline
There is no useful universal lead time without a defined job. Structure development, artwork revisions, materials, tooling, sample approval, manufacturing and delivery are separate stages. Tell the team your required arrival date and destination. Ask when the production clock starts and whether the quote assumes approved artwork, a confirmed sample and available material. Changes after approval can affect cost and timing.
Keep the approved reference available
Save the agreed artwork version and written specification with the accepted sample. If a new product size or finish is introduced later, review the changed parts again. Sample availability and charges depend on the requested reference, custom work and finishing. Confirm the sampling scope and cost before proceeding.
Can I approve colour on my phone?
A phone image is useful for discussion but can change colour appearance. Use the agreed proof or physical reference for critical colour and finish approval.
Does sample approval guarantee courier protection?
No. Product fit and presentation approval are different from a defined transit test of the complete packed shipping system.
