Rigid Box Buying Guide: Styles, Materials, Print & Cost
Start with the product you need to pack. This guide connects the box style, board, inside holder, printed finish and order quantity so you can ask for a quote that covers the complete job.

A rigid box is a firm paperboard presentation pack. It is commonly used for perfume, jewellery, beauty sets, gifts and launch kits. It can improve product presentation and hold a fitted insert, but it is not automatically a courier-safe shipping box. A glass bottle sent by courier may need both a rigid presentation box and a protective corrugated outer.
- One product: measure the complete item, including its cap or attached accessories.
- Several products: list every item and decide how the customer should remove each one.
- Retail display: keep the product name, size and required information readable.
- Gifting: allow for a message card, sleeve or additional branded component in the brief.
Compare the main box styles
| Style | Opening | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic or book-style | A hinged lid opens from one side | Lid movement, closure and room for the insert |
| Drawer or slider | A tray slides out of a sleeve | Pull tab, smooth travel and product access |
| Top and bottom | The lid lifts off a separate base | Lid depth and lift-off fit |
| Shoulder-neck | The lid reveals a raised inner neck | Alignment, visible neck and lining |
| Collapsible | Panels fold flat before assembly | Assembly steps, corner strength and insert storage |
| Cylinder or paper tube | A round lid lifts away from a tube | Internal diameter, height and product holder |
Specify materials in useful units
Use millimetres for the finished inside length, width and height. Board thickness is also expressed in millimetres. GSM describes the weight of a square metre of paper or board; it does not give an exact thickness. The rigid core, decorative wrapping paper and inside holder are separate parts and should be listed separately in a quotation. The final board choice depends on size, span, product weight and sample performance.
Match the finish to the artwork
Full-colour print can carry illustrations and product information. Foil creates a metallic detail; embossing raises an area and debossing presses it in. Spot UV adds selected glossy areas. These are different production steps, so show the exact logo or artwork area for each effect. Ask to see the proposed combination on the selected paper before approving the full order.
Prepare a quote that can be compared
Printing Material reviews these inputs before confirming minimum quantity, price and production timing. For Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad or Faridabad enquiries, include the delivery postcode and any receiving restrictions. A service area does not imply a separate factory or office in every city.
- Inside dimensions and product weight.
- Box style, core board, wrapping paper and inside holder.
- Artwork, print colours and separate foil, emboss or UV areas.
- Quantity per size and artwork version, rather than only the combined total.
- Sample type, packing method, delivery city and required arrival date.
- A breakdown of tooling, sample, unit, packing and freight charges where applicable.
Approve a physical reference
A plain dummy can establish shape and product fit. A printed proof checks artwork, while a finished approval sample can show the agreed paper, print and decoration. Ask what the sample does and does not represent. Keep the accepted sample and written specification as the reference for the production order.
Questions before you order
Is a rigid box the same as a kappa box?
Kappa box is a commonly used buying term for a rigid paperboard box. Confirm the core board, thickness, wrap and construction instead of relying on the name alone.
Can I order from a reference photograph?
Yes, a photograph is a useful starting point. Accurate dimensions, product information, quantity and finish details are still needed to quote and sample the box.
Is there one standard minimum order?
No single minimum is stated for every custom box. Materials, size, artwork versions, tooling and assembly affect the feasible quantity; ask for confirmation for your exact design.
