Printed corrugated packaging

Printed Corrugated Box Artwork and Proofing Guide

Approve a printed corrugated box against the final dieline, nominated board surface and agreed print route. Review artwork accuracy, colour expectations and the made-up box separately. A screen PDF can show panel content; it cannot demonstrate the complete pack’s physical fit or shipping performance.

Confirm the print route before final artwork

Corrugated packaging can use different production routes, including direct flexographic printing, digital printing and litho-laminated graphics. Smurfit Westrock’s printing overview illustrates these industry options. The route available for your order, its board surface and artwork requirements must be confirmed in the quotation; the list does not describe a universal in-house service.

Tell the team whether you need a simple shipping mark, a large printed brand area or detailed retail artwork. Identify the surfaces to be printed, any reverse-side print and the expected colour reference. Ask which parts of the proof will represent final production and which will be a layout simulation.

Build the artwork on the converter’s final dieline

Use the approved size and construction revision. Check which side of the flat drawing faces outward, where the glue joint sits, and the orientation of each panel once the box is erected. Keep the cut, crease and artwork information clearly separated in the working file. Confirm the required file format and treatment of technical layers before supplying production artwork.

Obtain the project’s bleed, safe-area, type, line and finish requirements from the converter. There is no single allowance that should be copied to every corrugated construction or print route. Fold a labelled mock-up to check the lid, front, side panels and base together. Review graphics crossing a fold or seam in the made-up state.

Know what each approval reference proves

Keep the approval roles separate
ReferenceUseful forConfirm separately
Artwork PDFText, versions, panel positions and specified colour information. Its status as a layout proof or agreed colour reference.
Colour referenceThe agreed target and method for judging colour. How the nominated board and print route are represented.
Structural mock-upOpening, assembly, fit and panel orientation.Which materials and decoration match production.
Production print sampleThe printed result produced by the stated sample method.Any remaining differences from the final run and agreed inspection scope.

Mark each reference with the artwork filename, dieline revision, date and approver. If an image, address, barcode or variant changes after approval, return that change through the same review instead of relying on an earlier sign-off.

Check barcodes on the finished panel

Confirm the encoded data, symbol type, size, position and clear area required around the code. Keep glue, folds, tape and other graphics out of the intended scanning area. GS1 India’s verification guidance explains the roles of placement, quiet zones, print contrast and verification.

A successful phone scan is a useful informal check, but it is not the same as the verification required by a trading partner. Agree the applicable barcode requirements and verification responsibility before production. The outer box’s label arrangement should also remain workable after sealing and packing.

Release one complete production brief

  • Box size, construction and approved dieline revision.
  • Nominated liner appearance and print route.
  • Final artwork file, variants and quantities per version.
  • Colour targets and the agreed proof or sample method.
  • Barcode and variable-information requirements.
  • Any specified finishing, labels and unprinted areas.
  • Named approval responsibility and the changes still awaiting approval.

For a quote, add the packed product dimensions and weight, inner protection, delivery city and postcode. Print approval settles the agreed appearance. Load, stacking and transit requirements still need review of the complete pack.

Questions before approving corrugated artwork

Can the same artwork be used on every board surface?

Have the artwork reviewed for the nominated surface and print route. Colour references, small detail and any coatings must be considered with that production choice.

Is approving the PDF enough to start production?

Confirm what the PDF approval covers. Structure, fit, materials, proof method and any required print sample should have their own agreed approval status.

Does good printing demonstrate that the box can carry the product?

No. Graphic appearance and complete-pack performance are different checks. Specify the packed load, handling and any required tests separately.
