Embossing & Debossing on SBS Packaging Boxes
Relief should be intentional, readable and compatible with the folded carton.
Raised and indented details are different
Embossing creates a raised pattern; debossing creates an indentation. Specify whether the effect is blind, printed or aligned with foil. A digital shadow or mockup cannot establish the final depth, feel or reverse-side impression.
Choose the area with the carton in mind
Review logo size, line detail, fold proximity, opposing panel contact and any internal holder. Deep or dense relief can change how a face behaves. Agree the effect on the specific board rather than importing a depth from an unrelated sample.
Tooling and registration belong in the brief
Supply vector artwork for the relief layer and clarify which artwork revision it aligns with. For foil/print alignment, approve the combined physical result. Number of designs, tools and finishing passes can affect the commercial scope.
Check both sides and the assembled pack
Look for reverse impressions, fibre damage, cracking at folds, registration and rubbing. Test the carton with its product; a relief detail that looks good flat should still allow packing and opening without friction or snagging.
Use it where it helps the buyer experience
A brand mark, emblem or selected pattern can create a useful tactile cue for cosmetics, fragrance and gifting. Avoid hiding important text in heavy decorative treatment. Quote embossing/debossing separately from a basic printed carton and separately from any foil finish.
Before you order
Can every GSM take the same embossing depth?
No universal depth is specified here. Grade, caliper, fibre behaviour, tool design and the artwork all need a sample review.
Can embossing be added after artwork approval?
It changes the production specification. Update and approve the artwork/tooling scope before manufacture.
Is debossing merely printing a darker mark?
No. It is an indented physical effect, not just a printed tonal treatment.
