Spot UV & Coating Choices for SBS Cartons
Tell us where the effect belongs—and what must remain functional.
Define the intended UV effect
Spot UV identifies selected printed areas for a coating effect. It is not interchangeable with every gloss varnish, full-surface coating or raised texture. State the visual/tactile result and review the process on the proposed board and print combination.
Protect information and functional panels
Plan coating around barcode/reading areas, variable batch panels, glue flaps and crease lines. Reflective or textured areas can change readability and handling; agree clear zones rather than assuming the whole surface should be coated.
Prepare a separate finishing layer
Supply the UV mask aligned with the final print/dieline revision. Identify whether the treatment is on one or more panels. Review fine linework, broad areas and registration with the converter before tooling or production setup.
Test the folded and packed carton
Inspect the finish after creasing, folding and rubbing against neighbouring packs. Confirm the appearance under practical lighting. A decorative UV coating is not evidence of food-contact compliance, liquid containment or courier protection.
Quote it on a like-for-like basis
Compare the same board, artwork, quantity and carton structure with and without the specified UV finish. Ask for sample/setup charges and any lamination/coating dependencies. The basic ₹3–4 discussion is not a promise for a UV-finished carton.
Before you order
Does spot UV require lamination in every case?
Do not assume one universal rule. The proposed board, ink and coating system must be reviewed as a compatible process.
Can I use UV over every panel?
Discuss the intended effect and preserve functional glue, reading and fold areas as specified by production.
Is raised UV the same as embossing?
No. A coating effect and shaping the board with embossing are different processes and should be quoted separately.
